Technical Support Article KB10205
This topic covers the upgrading your Microsoft Windows 98 to Windows XP on
manual CMMs using the ProCounter CMM Interface.
To identify the CMM Interface being used by your system, go to the drop down
menus, [Help→About], see expanded help.
If you have the ProCounter CMM Interface installed, please continue. Other
CMM Interfaces are not affected.
ProCounter versus ProCounter II
The ProCounter CMM Interface is a card installed inside your Geomet computer
system in an ISA card slot. Four connections are available that accept the XY
and Z encoder cables (DB-15 Connectors) and the touch probe (DB-9 Connector).
The next generation, ProCounter II is an external CMM Interface that connects
to the Geomet computer system through a standard USB II cable. All connections
to the CMM are directly into the ProCounter II box.
Each version requires a small system device driver that instructs the
computer to monitor the respective interface. This device driver is installed
when Geomet is installed on the system.
ProCounter
The drivers developed for the ProCounter CMM Interface follow standard device
driver specifications which were in effect for Windows 98 (all variants) and
Windows 95. When Windows XP was released, the device driver specifications
changed and were not backward compatible. These device drivers written for the
original ProCounter for Windows 95/98 will
not work on Windows XP system.
ProCounter II
The drivers developed for the USB ProCounter II device follow standard device
driver specifications and work on all Windows system starting with Windows 95.
Upgrading your Windows 98 System to Windows XP
To upgrade a Windows 98 system requires changing the ProCounter CMM Interface
to the next generation ProCounter II CMM Interface. Then the Windows system can
be upgraded to Windows XP.
